I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about this whole, sign up for an opportunity to purchase the PS5 thing but still went for it because Amazon hasn’t let me down in well over a decade. I can’t remember when I signed up for the invitation invite but I can remember when I received the 72 hour email, the day after Christmas. It must’ve been fate because my family got cash for Christmas so we had a wad of cash burning a hole in our pockets. We slept on it just in case we weren’t sure we wanted it, we just recently bought a new gaming pc and the Xbox x-series console earlier in the year. Well you obviously know we decided in favor of the PS5 so it was ordered on the 27th of Dec. Two days later, we’ve received it and have already spent the time setting it up and updating it. We don’t even have new games for it yet but we knew we wouldn’t get an opportunity to purchase it again any time soon. Once the new Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts games come out, we’ll be ready, it’s the first time we’ve ever purchased the console before the games release. The only downside imo is the size of the console, it’s a big eyesore. I prefer the black consoles over the lighter color consoles, wish it was black.

I just wanted to give a couple of quick points of note since everyone knows the console by now through reviews if nothing else.First, it should be noted that this is an updated version of the PS5 which has a new motherboard design for better cooling and power efficiency. Tech websites have tested both the original (1000 series) as well as first updated version (1100 series) and then this one (1200 series). The first two series had the same motherboard design, but the 1200 series has a much smaller motherboard and cooling design which is 2.5 pounds lighter by themselves. A couple of friends have the 1100 series bought a year ago and they are noticeably heavier.Second, the slight tulip shaped case design really does not like being laid to the side like previous PS consoles that could be horizontal or vertical for cabinet diversity. It just looks wrong and is not stable. That said, I bought the PS5 mostly for GT7 and other racing games and am not disappointing in 4K quality running a Gigabyte Aorus 48″ OLED 120Hz gaming monitor (LG C1 based OLED panel). I already have a $2,850 high end PC gaming rig built around an RTX 3080 Ti video card for that monitor, and for the $500 retail price in Blu Ray form, I can honestly say for the first time ever a console can hold its own in the gaming world up against we PC gods at the highest resolutions and frame rates!

I do about 90% of my gaming on the PC, but there are some games, that I prefer to play on consoles. I hadn’t been trying super-hard to get a PS5, but I did want to pick one up eventually. And about a month after I signed up for the Amazon queue, I got an email saying that I could buy one. So I did.To get the most out of the PS5, you’re going to want a mid-to-high end 4k TV. Something with a 120hz refresh rate, HDR, and has HDMI 2.1. Luckily the Sony X90J I have in my bedroom has all these features. Setup was pretty easy. No issues there. The Wifi seems to be lackluster, only reporting 15-ish MB/s (I have 1.2 Gbit service), my phone gets 50 MB/s in the same room, my gaming PC is hardwired and gets 120-140 MB/S. So I might end up just getting a switch and hardwiring the PS5 as well. The design is okay, I think that white plastic panels are bigger than they need to be. It’s not excessively loud. It would be nice to have more than one USB charging port for the controllers (it comes with one, but will support several more). Performance is quite good, even at 4k. Not quite as good as a high end gaming PC, but this is a close to PC performance has consoles have ever been. ( Both the PS5 and Series X have essentially PC internals). I haven’t added another SSD yet, but I probably will at a some point, if I can figure out how to use it as a media server like I did with my old PS3.Overall it’s a fine addition for any gamer. I’m still a PC gamer first, but the PS5 does have quite a bit of appeal.
